About Me
My name is Hannah Wallace. I was born and raised in uptown Saint John, New Brunswick. It's a big city (land-wise) with a very small-town feel on the East Coast of Canada. As much as I love little Saint John, I also love visiting new places. Especially anywhere near the ocean. Initially, my travel bug is what inspired this blog so family and friends could keep up with my adventures. Life is a bit different now since I live in Newfoundland but I'm still trying to make the most of what life has to offer.

I have my BSc (first class honours) in Biology-Psychology from the University of New Brunswick - Saint John. (I will forever be #proudlyUNB.) My honours project looked at the physiological response of juvenile Shortnose Sturgeon when exposed to seawater at low temperatures which resulted in my first scientific publication. However, while I was going through my undergrad I found my love of viruses! My independent study was a literature review of Ebola - my favourite virus! I am currently pursuing a PhD in Medicine (Immunology and Infectious Diseases), supervised by Dr. Rod Russell at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Specifically, I am looking at pyroptosis (an inflammatory form of programmed cell death) in response to hepatitis C virus, avian influenza and certain viral proteins.

In my free time (not that I have much as a PhD student), I love taking pictures and dancing. I started taking classical ballet classes in Saint John at Port City Dance Academy (now The Studio) 20 (!!!) years ago. When I moved to St John's, two and a half years ago, I began taking ballet as well as jazz, contemporary, broadway and hiphop classes at The Dance Centre (aka my home away from home). I also love my family, going for adventures with my boyfriend Jordan, baking, organizing, doing yoga and recently have become more involved with science communication.
